Why the Football Academy?
Coaches and counselors often notice their young athletes talking about their future in highly organized football. They see that many have focused their lives around their sports stardom. As the sports identity of these athletes grow, aspects of their personal and educational development may be given less notice. The life as an athlete certainly is an exciting and achievable goal. But, success as a college or professional football athlete is simply not as attainable as most people think.
Each year approximately 265,000 seniors play high school football and about 300 rookies earn a spot on a professional team. Simple mathematics reveals to us that a future career in sports participation for most graduating high school athletes is very limited. If an athlete beats the enormous odds against becoming a professional, he can expect to face personal and career challenges throughout an average of only four years. While athletes on all levels go on to live in our communities as productive individuals, many lead a life in a detrimental manner. A majority of athletes, parents, coaches and school administrators are concerned about the lack of resources available to help student athletes with their unique life issues.
